Part of enhancing your leadership capacity is learning to think about leadership from the perspective of Conversational Leadership. In order to do this, participants spend time learning new concepts and a new language of leadership.
The purpose of these initial meetings is to develop common understanding around the work of leaders and around a new way of talking about leadership principles and practices.

As a result, at the end of these foundational sessions, participants will be able to use the new language of leadership and understand the fundamental principles of Conversational Leadership. These principles include:

The value of centering a team (The “check in”)

People bring the outside world to every interaction—what’s going on at the office, at home, and so forth. A practice is needed to help center participants around the purpose of various types of gatherings.

The purpose of this segment is to demonstrate and develop common understanding among the individuals about how to center people to a gathering, so that attentions become less divided.

At the end of this segment, participants will be able to use the “check in” practice to convene a meeting and center people around the work at hand.

Learning conversation guidelines

To use the model of Conversational Leadership, it is necessary to understand the guidelines of learning conversations.

The purpose of this segment is to develop a shared meaning amongst individuals about the five learning conversation guidelines.

At the end of this segment, participants will understand the five learning conversation guidelines and will be able to use them in their daily leadership practice.

Ladder of Inference

Supporting the five learning conversation guidelines is balancing the disciplines of advocacy and inquiry, a practice which is taught using the Ladder of Inference. The Ladder helps us understand how we process information and come to conclusions, an understanding that is essential to our successful use of the five learning conversation guidelines and in moving our personal leadership practices forward.

The purpose of this segment is to develop a mutual understanding amongst individuals abut the Ladder of Inference and its connection to mental models and enhanced conversations.

At the end of this segment, participants will understand the Ladder of Inference and will be able to use it in various interactions as a leadership and teaching tool.

Safely dangerous space
Successful learning conversations require space that is conducive to openness, authenticity, and caring.

The purpose of this segment is to develop a common understanding among the individuals about how they as leaders influence their space and to help them understand their role in creating the most effective space for learning conversations, Safely Dangerous Space.

At the end of this segment, participants will have a clear understanding of Safely
Dangerous Space and will know how to create it within their organizations.

Leading in a culture of learning/change
Change is a part of any organization and is embraced in the Conversational Leadership model. Therefore, leaders are encouraged to accept change and learn how to leverage it to their organization’s advantage.

The purpose of this segment is to teach individuals the relationship between leadership, learning and change.

At the end of this segment, participants will understand the role of change in their organization and will be able to use leadership practices to leverage changes for the
betterment of their organization.

Visioning the future
Creating a vision and enrolling others in it is the essential practice of any leader. Leaders must dream the future and seek the help of others in making the dream a reality.

The purpose of this segment is to create a common understanding among individuals about the importance of vision and to share the practices of creating a vision and enrolling others in it so that it becomes a shared
dream.

At the end of this segment, participants will understand the connection between
leadership and vision and will know how to create and share a vision.

Quality Relationships = Quality Results
The culmination of JLC’s work is to enhance the quality of relationships among people in a system. The reason for this emphasis on relationships is because there is a direct correlation between the quality of relationships among people striving toward a common
result and the quality of the results achieved. The stronger and more authentic the relationships, the better the results.

The purpose of this segment is to develop a shared understanding among the individuals about the connection between the model of Conversational Leadership, relationships within a system, and the quality of results.

At the end of this segment, participants will have a clear understanding of the importance of high quality relationships in their organization and will have developed the leadership principles and practices to help them grow those relationships.
